The other day e-mail arrived in my inbox with the subject line “Buy one, get one 50 percent of all clothes.
Two days only!” I get these sales e-mails from the ___1___ almost weekly. Although I know exactly the sellers are

consider all the choices.” He points out you don’t have to consider all the choices. “You always have to ___6___

performance or comfort? You need to ___7___ what’s more important to you.”
Making a shopping list before ___8___ a store isn’t just about remembering necessary things; it can also help

Human activity is bringing big trouble to Mount Qomolangma. Both microplastics(微塑料) and climate
change are polluting the mountain and causing its ice to melt, scientists say.
The highest mountain in the world is facing the problem of microplastics. A recent study found that the
mountain is full of these plastics, which are usually less than 5 millimeters in size. They can be found in many
things, including the clothing, tents and ropes that are left behind by climbers.
Microplastics take thousands of years to break down on their own. They are already known for posing a
danger to sea animals. Now people are worried about Qomolangma, as the mountain already suffers from serious
pollution.
Global warming is also affecting the mountain, as well as its climbers. Another study points out that the
glaciers around Qomolangma have thinned by nearly 100 meters since the 1960s. As the ice melts, cracks in the ice
are becoming deeper and more dangerous, bringing danger to those who try to climb the mountain, according to
Global News.
Landslides(滑坡) are also becoming more probable. There are many parts of the mountain that are held
together by just frozen rocks or permafrost(永久冻土), according to Professor Joseph Shea at the University of
Northern British Columbia, Canada. When this permafrost melts, the risk of dangerous landslides goes up.
11. Why is Mount Qomolangma full of microplastics?
A. Because of climate change. B. Because microplastics are tiny.
C. Because of human activity. D. Because the mountain ice melts.
12. What does the underlined word “posing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A
.

13. How much have the glaciers probably thinned every ten years since the 1960s?

15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education. B. Health. C. Technology. D. Environment.

The power of word became clear to me when a couple of years back, I ran into a great trouble in my work. It
was my first job, and I didn’t have a very good time in the company. There were some unclear words from a certain
customer, and I completely misunderstood them, which brought some troubles for my company. And then what
happened? I had a “serious” talk with my boss and you know what kind of talk it was. Everything seemed so
difficult and boring, and I felt like the biggest loser on earth.
And just when needed it, came the strength in these words “You need to lean back a little to leap further”.
These words came from Jessie, an old friend of mine. They made me feel better rapidly and I realized what power
encouraging words from a friend held.
Soft, sincere and encouraging words from friends can give you strength in hard times. They can act as the light
of hope in your time of darkness. They can make you smile and help you forget your worries. Using encouraging
words is an art and it is a symbol of one’s “emotional intelligence”.
Words which come from the bottom of the heart can make your friend realize that what he is thinking as “the
end” is not an end, but just “a beginning”. You must have read the famous poem “Don’t Quit(放弃)”. It says that
sometimes, things go wrong but you should not quit. A few words of encouragement can really raise one’s spirits
and hence make a difference.
16. Why did the writer get into trouble in her first job?
A. Because it was her first job. B. Because she misunderstood a customer.
C. Because her boss was serious. D. Because she did not like her customer.
17. How did the writer feel after finishing the talk with her boss?
A. Sad B. Serious. C. Strange. D. Surprised.
18. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A. Jessie asked the writer to be braver. B. Jessie asked the writer to jump further.
C. Jessie wanted the writer to go home. D. Jessie wanted the writer to take it easy.
19. Which is NOT the power of encouraging words?
A. To improve intelligence. B. To give people strength.
