One summer, Mei, a curious 13-year-old girl, found something strange in her
grandmother’s garden. Every night, the white moonflowers ( 月 光 花 ) opened up,
shining under the moonlight. But one evening, she saw a tiny bat ( 蝙蝠) flying near
the flowers.
“Grandma, why is there a bat in the garden?” Mei asked.
“Ah, that’s our little helper,” her grandmother smiled. “Moonflowers open up at
night, and bats pollinate (授粉) them. Without bats, these flowers would disappear.”
Mei was very interested. She began staying up late to watch the bats. One night,
she found there were fewer flowers and fewer bats. Worried, she searched online and
learned that streetlights made nocturnal animals like bats hard to see clearly, making it
hard for them to find food.
Mei decided to help, so Mei and her grandmother turned off the garden lights at
night. She also planted more moonflowers and built a small “bat house” for
protection. Slowly, the bats returned. By the end of summer, the garden was filled
with shining flowers and flying wings.
Her science teacher, Mr. Li, heard about Mei’s project. “You’ve discovered
something important,” he said. “Every animal, even bats, has a role in nature. When
we protect them, we protect ourselves.”
Mei’s garden became a model for their school’s Eco Club. Soon, neighbours
